Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Coffee Blend

What if I told you that you can make your own pumpkin spice coffee blend at home without resorting to buying flavored K-Cups or expensive Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts to get your fix? Well, I have the perfect budget solution for you. All it requires is some spices, most of which you may already have on hand, and a 12oz bag of your favorite ground coffee. Pumpkin spice-flavored coffee is one of those things some of us anxiously anticipate every Fall season, and with everything going on in the world, we all need something to look forward to.

I love Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, and my local supermarket had it on sale the other day, so I bought a bag just to make this Pumpkin spice-flavored coffee.

Make the Pumpkin Spice Blend

Start with making the pumpkin spice blend. You can, of course, buy pumpkin spice already mixed for you at the grocery store. But if you want a specific flavor to pop, or if you dislike one of the spices, creating your own blend can help you customize the flavor to fit your preferences.

The first step here is to make your pumpkin spice blend. If you purchased pre-made pumpkin spice, you can skip this step. Mix the following ingredients if you have them all ground already, otherwise transfer to a spice grinder and mix together.

  • 3 TBSP Ground Cinnamon
  • 2 TSP Ground Ginger
  • 2 TSP Freshly Grated Nutmeg
  • 1 TSP Ground Allspice
  • 1 TSP Cloves

Transfer the entire 12oz package of coffee to a large mixing bowl. Use your favorite unflavored coffee for this step. Whisk in 5 tsp of the pumpkin spice mixture until completely blended.

This is optional, but I added a capful of Vanilla Extract to the mixture and whisked really well. Make sure it is evenly incorporated and that there are no lumps.

It’s so easy, I am kicking myself because I haven’t done this before.

Add the pumpkin spice blend to taste. You may find that you enjoy more Allspice notes or more Cinnamon notes, and I like this recipe because you can augment the flavor however you want. That is the freedom that comes with designing your own blend!

Pumpkin Spice Coffee Blend

Create your own Pumpkin Spice Coffee blend using a 12 oz bag of your favorite coffee and some spices in your kitchen pantry.

  • 1 12oz Package of Unflavored Ground Coffee
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 3 tbsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 2 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 1 tsp Ground Allspice
  • 1 tsp Cloves
  • 2 tsp Freshly Grated Nutmeg
  1. Combine the spices into a small mixing bowl.

  2. Transfer spice mixture into a spice grinder and grind until fine. Then, transfer the spice mixture into a jar.

  3. Empty a 12oz bag of unflavored ground coffee to a large mixing bowl.

  4. Add 5 tsp of the Pumpkin Spice blend to the coffee. Whisk together until the spices are completely incorporated.

  5. Add 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract to the coffee mixture. Whisk until incorporated and no lumps are present.

  6. Transfer the coffee blend into an airtight container of your choice.

  7. Brew coffee as usual.

The flavor, to me, is very light. You can definitely smell the pumpkin spice, but the flavor doesn’t knock you over. We found that a drip brew gives a milder flavor, but letting the coffee sit in the French Press brought out more of the pumpkin spice flavor. I actually enjoyed the coffee better preparing it with the French Press.

I am so proud that we made our pumpkin spice coffee blend. We’ll get about 62 cups (from a 12oz bag) of flavored Pumpkin Spice Coffee for $0.16 per cup. This is based on buying a 12oz bag of coffee and having most of the spices on hand in your pantry. That’s a lot better than those K-Cups ($0.54 per cup) and a heck of a lot cheaper than Starbucks. I just like the fact that I can control what goes in my coffee, and if it saves me some money in the process, all the better.

I hope you enjoyed this recipe! This is the first time I have made my own blended coffee and it wasn’t bad at all. Bring the smells and flavors of Fall into your home with a warm cup of your own, homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee. Happy Fall!
